    NASA Administrator Charles Bolden has named Cornell University Professor Mason Peck to be the agency's chief technologist, effective in January. Peck will serve as the agency's principal advisor and advocate on matters concerning technology policy and programs. Read More

    On Friday, November 4, 2011, twelve OSCAR Graduate students ventured off campus to visit the optical science laboratories at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. During their visit, the students were given a tour that included a research lab, the optical components testing room, and the high bay clean room. Staff from the Human Resources and the Education Departments organized an information session for the students where they discussed the many research opportunities available at Goddard. More

    Dr. Mukti Rana, Assistant Professor in the Physics and Pre-Engineering Department and an OSCAR Scientist, publishes an online book titled, " Applications of RF Sputtered GexSi1-x and GexSi1-xOy Thin Films for Uncooled Infrared Detectors". This book, co-authored by Donald P. Butler and published by Nova Science Publishers, INC., ISBN: 978-1-61324-357-2-2011, will help the researchers working in the infrared detection area. Infrared detection technique is used, among others, in night vision cameras, law enforcement, search and rescue in toxic or smoke filled environment, and medical imaging. Read more

    Martha Gwengi, a senior in the College of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology (CMNST), was all smiles upon learning she would receive an honorable mention award at the 14th Annual Philadelphia AMP Research Symposium and Mentoring Conference hosted by Drexel University. A cash prize accompanied the award. This year's theme "Changing the Face of the Scientific Enterprise—Broadening Participation" put the focus on emerging undergraduate leaders in their respective fields of scientific study. For the poster competition, Gwengi presented her work entitled "Movements of Polystyrene Beads in Contraceptive Gels." The research aims to "investigate the protective characteristics of vaginal contraceptive gels against various pathogenic particles such as HIV viruses.". Read more

    Dr. John W. Delano, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Albany will present a public lecture on NASA's Solar System Exploration and Beyond: Astrobiology. The lecture will be held on Thursday, October 20th, 2011 at 6 p.m., in the Lecture Hall 205 in the Luna I. Mishoe Science Center South. Read more

    Dr. Noureddine Melikechi was invited to talk at the Pocono Lake Preserve on July 13, 2011. In a beautiful natural setting, he described to a public audience the basic idea behind using nanotechnology and photonics to detect biomedical signs of cancers. The title of his talk is "From nanoparticules to detecting diseases: can we bridge the gap?" Over 50 people, ranging in age from around 6 years old to slightly and not as slightly older, attended the presentation.

    Dr. Noureddine Melikechi and Dr. Renu Tripathi traveled to Huntsville, Alabama recently. On July 22, 2011, Dr. Melikechi and Dr. Tripathi visited the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), Huntsville, Alabama (www.nasa.gov/centers/marshall/home/index.html) to present the 2010-2011 annual report that describes the scientific, educational and financial activities of the DSU NASA URC program. Upcoming Events

  • November 18th, 2011, 11 am - 12 am

    DSU is holding a press briefing and "send-off" event this Friday, November 18th, from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. in Parlors B and C of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Center. This event is being held for Dr. Noureddine Melikechi and graduate student Alissa Mezzacappa who will travel to Cape Canaveral next week for the launching of NASA's biggest Rover yet, Curiosity.
    Dr. Melikechi and Alissa have been working with a team of researchers from the Los Alamos National Laboratory on the ChemCam Instrument that is one of ten instruments that make up the Mars science Lab housed on Curiosity.

    Delaware State University will present guest speaker Dr. Roger Wiens, a NASA scientist who is intimately involved in the space agency's upcoming Mars launch, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, in Longwood Auditorium in the Bank of America Building (College of Business) on campus. The event – which is part of the College of Mathematics, Natural Sciences & Technology Dean's Distinguished Lecturer Series – is free and open to the public. Dr. Wiens will share information about the much-anticipated Nov. 25 launch of the Mars Science Laboratory, which is expected to land along with the Curiosity Rover on Mars' surface in August 2012. Dr. Wiens will discuss the instrumentation on the rover and what scientists hope will be revealed about the habitability of Mars from data that will be returned to earth. Read more and the flier

    Former Delaware Senator Ted Kaufman (Jan. 16, 2009 - Nov. 15, 2010) will be the featured speaker for the College of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology Dean's Distinguished Lecturer Series on Tuesday, November 8th, 2011, 6 p.m. in the Longwood Auditorium, Bank of America Building. Sen. Kaufman will speak on the topic of S.T.E.M. education and dialog with the audience on the state of S.T.E.M. education today. Dr. Noureddine Melikechi is Dean of the College of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology.     Dr. Elizabeth Gardner from the University of Alabama, Birmingham's Department of Justice will present a lecture at DSU at 11 a.m. in the WCJ Library room 600.
